4.0 out of 5 stars Works great for Sonos.., October 28, 2010

(REAL NAME)
Yesterday I purchased one of these drives to use as a Network Attached Storage drive for my Sonos music system. This drive is perfect for that setup and exceeded my expectations. The setup for this drive is a snap. My PC and Sonos system recognized it with zero issues. The drive throughput is about 70Mb/s which is plenty for my purposes. Also (and a key feature for Sonos), this drive will spin down after inactivity and will even let you set how long it waits before spinning down (have not seen any other drive in this price range which will do that). Also, this drive comes pre-formatted with an NTFS file system so no reformatting is needed like with most external drives. Having a drive with NAS capabilities is excellent because you need less hardware to make the drive available to Sonos. Lastly, because the drive doesn't have an on/off switch, you won't have to worry if you lose power that you'll have to turn this back on (like with the old Linksys NSLU2).

The only reason... Read more

Hello Thomas -

Glad to hear you are enjoying your new My Book Live as a companion for your Sonos system.

For remote access, you can actually set up a free Mionet account that lets you access your My Book Live from any Web browser.

To set up the account, simply type "MybookLive" into your browser and you will open up the Dashboard for the device. Within the Dashboard, select Settings / Remote Access / Mionet and click on "Create new account" to set up a free username and password. This free Mionet account will then let you access the contents of your drive from any Internet Connected PC or Mac.

Simply go to Mionet.com, type in your user name and password and you can access . You can also share specific folders or the entire drive secure. If you have an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or Android phone, you can also access all your photos in a cool viewer app (also for free) called WD Photos.

The PC application that you discovered on mionet.com lets you access your PC as well as the drive, but that does involve an annual fee. Thanks for your feedback. We will try to make this clearer so other users will not be confused about how to use our free remote access service.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reliable and fast, November 16, 2010
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program ( What's this?)
These devices are one of the "must-haves" for the modern home entertainment center or home networks. They can perform multiple tasks - from backups to media streaming. If you have a network, and just want a common place to store files, this will do it. Need a streaming media server for your new TV or networked media player? Ditto. Automatic network backup? Check.

I'm using it for storing photos and videos. Since digital photos are only virtual (no more negatives for safety!), backups are a must. I keep several backups, as photography is a hobby and a job. I also have media streaming devices hooked up to my TV's, and they can play video, audio and show photos from the web and attached network devices. This device shows up on the list of network devices, and it's a few clicks to navigate to the media desired. Streaming works perfectly.

Everything you need is in the box. A short networking cable, power supply, the network drive and installation CD... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars USB work-around for direct-connect -- Use an ethernet cable, January 7, 2011
This review is from: Western Digital My Book Live 2 TB Personal Cloud Storage Drive (Personal Computers)
The lack of a USB port is not an issue if you want to direct-connect this WD drive to a computer.
For this WD drive, you simply connect a normal ethernet cable -- e.g. the one provided in the box -- from the NAS to your CPU.
I move files around easily once my laptop recognizes "MYBOOKLIVE"
You'll need a 10/100/1000 Gigabit ethernet network adapter on your computer to max out the transfer rate; otherwise, a 10/100 network adapter tops out at 11 MB/s.

Other NAS drives require a specially wired "crossover" ethernet cable to connect them directly to a computer (rather than a normal/straight-through ethernet cable).
The same way that a crossover cable direct-connects 2 computers, it can be used with a network drive because a NAS drive has its own IP identity.
A crossover ethernet cable can be purchased for less than $5 at a computer store.

I discovered that this WD NAS drive has an "auto-crossover" feature that senses a computer, so... Read more

Calvin,

I am glad you are happy with the My Book Live. One quick correction to your great suggestion regarding connecting the My Book Live to a computer. You can use any standard Ethernet cable (Cat5 or greater). You do not need a crossover cable as the My Book Live will create an auto crossover connection automatically.
